An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 jolted off the east coast of Honshu, Japan at 0012 GMT on Saturday, the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 38.3 km, was initially determined to be at 40.93 degrees north latitude and 143.30 degrees east longitude, according to Xinhua.

No details regarding the possible damage or casualties have been released so far.
